Newark, New Jersey, is actively pursuing a greener and more sustainable future through various community-driven environmental initiatives. These efforts focus on enhancing the city’s resilience, promoting clean energy, and ensuring environmental justice for all residents.
Office of Sustainability’s Multi-Pronged Strategy
The city’s Office of Sustainability is dedicated to creating a healthier and more resilient Newark. Their comprehensive strategy includes:
- Amplifying Newark’s tree canopy
- Increasing access to locally-grown, nourishing food
- Fostering climate-resilient communities
- Transitioning to clean energy
- Cultivating resident-led community transformation
These initiatives are designed to tackle environmental health issues and improve the quality of life for Newark residents. The Office collaborates with municipal departments, the Newark Environmental Commission, and various stakeholders to achieve these goals. Learn more about the Office of Sustainability.
Newark Canopy Initiative
In partnership with the New Jersey Institute of Technology’s Center for Natural Resources, Newark launched the Newark Canopy Initiative. This project aims to plant 331 new trees across five targeted neighborhoods, selected based on community-centered analyses identifying areas with the greatest need for increased urban tree canopy. The initiative seeks to reduce heat, sequester carbon emissions, and provide environmental education and job opportunities for residents. Read more about the Newark Canopy Initiative.
Environmental Justice and Cumulative Impacts Ordinance
The Newark Environmental Commission, comprising dedicated resident volunteers, advises the Mayor and Municipal Council on environmental and sustainability issues. A significant achievement of the Commission is the passage of Newark’s Environmental Justice and Cumulative Impacts Ordinance, the first of its kind in the United States. This groundbreaking law requires companies seeking to operate in Newark to demonstrate that they will not contribute to the city’s existing pollution burden, highlighting Newark’s commitment to protecting its residents from additional environmental hazards. Advancements in Clean Energy
Newark has made significant strides in clean energy adoption. In June 2025, the city completed a 7.2-megawatt solar installation at the Port Newark Container Terminal. This installation now generates 50% of the terminal’s annual energy needs, reducing emissions and improving air quality. The system also has the capability to feed excess power into the regional utility grid, providing clean energy to Newark and surrounding areas. Read about the solar installation at Port Newark.
These initiatives reflect Newark’s proactive approach to environmental sustainability and resilience. Through collaborative efforts and community engagement, the city continues to make significant progress toward a greener and healthier future for all its residents.
